There has been a theory circulating the Internet for years that “James Bond” is simply a codename used by 007. This would explain why there are multiple people going by the same name.
The strongest argument for this is the fact that George Lazenby acknowledges that he has replaced Sean Connery as James Bond in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, when he says the line, "This never happened to the other fellow" when he fails to woo a woman.
Many fans have countered Lazenby's remark by saying that line was simply an in-joke and shouldn’t have been taken literally.
Although this sounds like a fascinating concept, the fan theory is very easy to contradict.
Bond’s wife, Tracy, died in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Bond visits her grave in For Your Eyes Only when the character was played by Roger Moore. If Bond was simply a codename, why would Tracy’s gravestone have her surname as Bond?
