25 Most Hotly Anticipated Movies Of Winter 2016 - Ranked
15. Collateral Beauty
Release Date: December 16th
Billed As: David Frankel takes an ensemble cast - led by Will Smith - through loss and depression and to the other side and redemption. Sort of like A Monster Calls, only without a monster... you know, calling.
Hype: There's something about the end of 2016 that seems to suggest that dealing with loss is the big button issue: it's a big part of A Monster Calls, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, Arrival, Manchester By The Sea... Even others like Doctor Strange is about post-traumatic reinvention. Hopefully Frankel's version will be received more like Gravity than Reign Over Me.
Frankel might best be remembered for The Devil Wears Prada but since that came out to great success, he's made Marley & Me, The Big Year, Hope Springs and One Chance, so he owes us a good one. And in Will Smith he's got one of those stars who is almost bullet-proof (or at least his appeal is) - people will actually still go and see films solely because of his billing, and that's rare.
