Hayao Miyazaki may be the face of Studio Ghibli, but co-founder Isao Takahata has directed some of the company's best animations yet.

Takahata has always been more experimental in his approach to animation than other Studio Ghibli directors and the delicacy of the watercolors used here is stunning to behold, particularly in this shot where we meet Takenoko for the first time.
