Obi-Wan Kenobi was the link between the fabled Republic and the destructive Empire that rules the Galaxy in Episode IV. Audiences had quickly grown attached to the elderly Jedi, and they were united in their confusion at why Alec Guiness had allowed the dark villain to kill him.
