25 Things You Didn't Know About The Mask
10. The Mask Acts Like Classic Cartoon Characters
One of the reasons that Jim Carrey signed on to play Stanley Ipkiss is the character's love of cartoons, a passion shared by the actor himself.
And whether conceived by Carrey or written into the script, it's not terribly shocking that The Mask ends up homaging numerous classic cartoon characters throughout the film.
His tornado spin resembles the Tasmanian Devil's very own, his attempts to romance Tina in the park are a clear homage to Pepe Le Pew, his Oscar-worthy death speech in the gangster's arms references a Buggs Bunny short, and when The Mask's tongue rolls out as he watches Tina perform at the Coco Bongo, this is a clear nod to Tex Avery's Wolf.
Seeing these classic moments updated with (at the time) state-of-the-art visual effects sure is a hoot.
