The revelation of Scabbers being an animagus was shocking because of the atrocities that he had committed as a human and as a friend years earlier. He had also been sleeping in Ron's bed for years under the pretence of being an innocent but chubby rat... Out of all of the wizarding families, or even muggles that Peter could have chosen to cosy up to, he cuddled up to the Weasleys who just happened to be Harry's best friends. The discovery also revealed that Sirius Black wasn't as crazy and manic as everyone thought he was. Oh, and innocent.
