30 Essential Movies To Watch Before Turning 30

23. 13 Going On 30 (2004)

Synopsis: Jennifer Garner plays a thirteen year-old who jumps forward in time after making a wish on her birthday to be thirty. After realising her wish came true, Garner discovers that her life at thirty was not as glamorous as she wanted it to be. Not knowing if she will return to her thirteen year old self, she sets out to put her life back in order. Lesson: Try not to lose sight of your happiness. It's okay for your goals to change over time, but make sure you don't change for the worse to achieve those goals. There are a million different ways to get what you want; don't choose the path of malice and deceit. You will look back on your life and regret it all.

22. Heathers (1988)

Synopsis: Winona Ryder plays student liaison to the popular group of girls at her high school that are known as "The Heathers". After meeting Christian Slater, the mysterious transfer student, Ryder allows her hate for the head Heather to drive her to murderous lengths which shifts the entire school's ecosystem off balance. Lesson: Don't get too wrapped up in malicious fantasy. Though it's common and healthy to have ire so radiating that it haunts you, it is never okay to kill, even if you save a few hundred people by the end. Also, if you see that someone you are romantically linked to is not who you thought they were, get out. Get out as soon as you can.

21. Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

Synopsis: John Cusack is a hitman who returns to his hometown for a job on the very weekend of his high school reunion. His first hurdle is to get his high school sweetheart, Minnie Driver, to forgive him for running out on her on prom night before disappearing without a trace. Things get hairy, however, when she discovers his occupation and that his target is her own father. Lesson: If you have a true talent for an otherwise unorthodox profession, don't let anyone else make you feel bad about it. You go for it and you make it happen. If the people in your life do, in fact, love and care for you, they will learn to accept your talent and drive, rather than judge you for your medium. Don't be afraid to pursue what makes you happy.
