Kubrick once said: "If it can be written or thought, it can be filmed." Well, that quote was certainly backed up by Denis Villeneuve's Dune, which adapted a seemingly un-filmable novel into a captivating, engrossing and best of all, coherent sci-fi epic.

Not only is the film a technical masterwork, but it's also a triumph of storytelling. Even if it can be emotionally distant, the film still unfolds in a richly-drawn world populated with compelling characters, and tells an absolutely fascinating story full of razor-sharp twists and turns.

Sci-fi movies are often snubbed by the Oscars, so it was a huge relief that Dune managed to not only get into the Best Picture field, but also get nine other well-deserved nominations and win six technical Oscars.

All in all, Dune stands tall and mighty as one of the best sci-fi movies of the century, and a film that was well worth the extended wait (thanks to Covid). Dune Part 2, which adapts the second half of the book, is on the way and if it's anything like the first one it should be absolutely terrific.
