30 Greatest Best Picture Oscar Nominees Of The Last Ten Years

23. Marriage Story

Birdman Michael Keaton

A slice-of-life drama and a great one at that, Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story is a rich, textured and beautifully written divorce drama that avoids giving easy answers or having heroes and villains.

It's as brilliantly authentic as it's emotionally bruising and not only does it feature one of 2019's finest screenplays, but it boasts career-best lead turns from Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson and in the director's chair, Baumbach does a fabulous job of making what is a dialogue-based film cinematically engaging.

It's easily one of the finest and most affecting films of 2019 and it was lovely to see what isn't really a traditionally Oscar-friendly film do so well and get six nominations - even if Laura Dern beating Florence Pugh (Little Women) and Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit) for Best Supporting Actress for a fairly unchallenging role was completely ridiculous.
