There are long-gestating sequels, and then there's Mary Poppins Returns, which comes some 54 years after the original, Julie Andrews-starring musical delighted audiences.

Directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago), the sequel sees Emily Blunt taking on the iconic role in a story set 25-years after the first, with Mary Poppins returning to help Michael and Jane Banks (who now have families of their own) after a personal loss.

It's a difficult task to live up to the original, but the early signs thus far are great, Blunt is a perfect choice for Poppins, and the rest of the cast - which includes Ben Whishaw, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Emily Mortimer - is superb, while the all-important musical numbers from the duo beyond Broadway's Hairspray, Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman. To some the sound of this sequel might be quite atrocious but, if it can capture the spirit and quality of the original, it'll be Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
