27. BlacKkKlansman

John David Washington Ballers
HBO

The latest offering from Spike Lee sounds like one of the director's best efforts in ages. BlacKkKlansman, despite the annoying titling, is the kind of project that he should be able to do great justice to.

It tells the story of Ron Stallworth, an Africa-American who works as a detective in Colorado Springs and successfully manages to infiltrate the local branch of the Ku Klux Klan, rising to the chapter's head.

Based on the book by Stallworth himself, it's a relevant, compelling story that should make for a dramatic, intense movie, complete with a strong cast: John David Washington (son of Denzel) plays Stallworth, with support from Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, and Corey Hawkins, while a Cannes premiere (where it'll compete for the Palme d'Or) suggests a lot of confidence in it.
