20. First They Killed My Father

First They Killed My Father
Netflix

Release Date: September 15th

Billed As:

Angelina Jolie's personal, outraged look at the human cost of Pol Pot's murderous regime in Cambodia as a family are torn apart. Not the usual kind of thing you'd expect from a Netflix deal, in all honesty, but that's not a bad thing.

Hype:

Loung Ung's memoir of her time living under Pol Pot, becoming a child soldier and losing her family (to find them again) is a stunning, vital work, and it was only a matter of time before it was adapted. In Jolie's own words, it's the story of a war through the eyes of a child, and while the sentiment to shock and appall at the idea of war must have been pressing, word is that Jolie's approach is more measured and thoughtful and doesn't aim for provocation.

Importantly, the film features an almost entirely Cambodian cast, which deserves a lot of credit (even if it shouldn't HAVE to in 2017)
