Jack Nicholson was paid "only" $6 million to play The Joker in the movie, but he smartly wrangled himself back-end participation on the film's profits, and after it grossed more than $400 million worldwide, his pay packet ultimately settled at a tidy $60 million.

In 1989, this was a record for the most money that any actor had been paid for a single performance, and it unsurprisingly remains the fattest pay-day of the legendary actor's career.

Given that even Robert Downey Jr. fails to command much more than that for his gargantuan Avengers salaries, that's an incredible feat of negotiation for a movie that came out 30 years ago.
