Issa López's horror-fantasy is inevitably going to be compared to the works of Guillermo del Toro until the end of time, melding real-world terror with a devastatingly effective - and affecting - ghost story.

A group of young orphans attempt to survive in a Mexican city devastated by the country's long-standing drug war, and without giving too much away, López manages to expertly inject supernatural elements into a more recognisable reality without upsetting the film's delicate tonal balance.

The performances from the young cast are spectacular, it moves fast at just 83 minutes in length, and delivers an emotional gut-punch of an ending. Terrific.

Tigers Are Not Afraid is out now on Shudder.
