19. Malcolm's Unexplained Black Daughter... Who Stows Away (The Lost World)
A subplot that's both weird and hilariously nonsensical is when Malcolm's daughter Kelly shows up, and she's...not white. Though there's rampant speculation that Steven Spielberg included the character to reflect the multi-racial make-up of his own family, it sticks out like a sore thumb and undeniably reeks of distracting tokenism at its worst. A weak but amusing attempt is made to lampshade it when Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn) sarcastically says, "Do you see any family resemblance there?" Perhaps it might not be so difficult to follow had Kelly actually been a useful character, instead of a thoroughly annoying squirt throughout her entire screen tenure. Try not to groan when her father figures out she's stowed away, just try...
