34 WTF Moments From The Mad Max Franchise

18. Dubbing The Australian Accents For American Audiences (Mad Max)

One of the more hilarious and bizarre stories of the original movie's production is that, ahead of its 1980 U.S. release, the vast majority of the dialogue had to be re-dubbed with American actors due to the strong Australian accents, which it was believed Americans wouldn't be able to understand. In addition, much of the movie's Aussie-specific slang was altered (including things as simple as changing "Oi!" to "Hey!"), and the original audio track wasn't made available to Americans until the DVD release at the turn of the century. Strange for sure, but it also kinda makes sense, given how incomprehensible some of the characters on the original track still remain without the benefit of subtitles.
