18. The Excessive Build-Up In The First Two Movies
One fairly unexpected aspect of the first two movies is just how front-loaded with build-up they are, to the point that in each case it's well over an hour before the titular competition kicks off. In the first movie, the Games don't begin until the 70-minute mark, and rather than hurl a more familiar audience into the fray much faster the second time, it's a whole 83 minutes in Catching Fire. Sure, there's a ton of character development to account for and these movies are certainly much more than just people killing each other, but even so, it's pretty unexpected that they take so damn long getting to the focal event.
