Ever since The Hunger Games was first published in 2008, much has been made of its thematic similarity to Koushun Takami's 1999 novel Battle Royale, which was swiftly adapted into a popular 2000 movie. To many fans of the book and movie, The Hunger Games is just a "dumbed down" rehash of the same idea (kids are forced by a dystopian government to kill each other until one remains), though many have leapt to author Suzanne Collins' defense, supporting her claim that she came up with the idea independently and the similarities are pure coincidence. What you prefer will likely depend on what you saw first, but they're both very much their own beasts despite the slightly suspicious similarity of their premises.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
