4 Best and 5 Worst "Twists" of 2012 Movies

1. "Surprise! You Slept With the Daughter of One of Your Mortal Enemies! Here's a Knife!" - The Dark Knight Rises

For months, Marion Cotillard (one of the greatest living actresses of our time) had to blatantly lie to fans and speculators about her role in The Dark Knight Rises. And maybe we were asking for this, because her reveal as Talia is not only the most drawn-out, absurdly exposition-y five minutes of the movie, but it was so completely predictable by Batfans that we all just sort of sat there and watched slack-jawed all the credit seemingly slide from Bane to Talia. No, I no longer think Bane was "just a henchmen" but I certainly do think the character got the rug pulled out from under his feet in that monologue. It's not even that a lot of people didn't not see it coming, it's just that a lot of us hoped that it would have felt a bit more complete instead of so off-the-cuff, how-many-twists-can-we-get-in-here, and "gotcha!" inducing. Tsk, Mr. Nolan. Of course, I've already stated that your final twist did sort of win me back over.

Cameron Carpenter is an aspiring screenwriter, current film and journalism student, and self-diagnosed cinephile, which only sounds bad in certain circles. Devoted fan of comics, movies, theater, Jesus Christ, Sidney Lumet, and Peter O'Toole, he sometimes spends too much time on his Scribd and comicbookmovie.com, but doesn't think you're one to judge, devoted reader. You can follow him on Twitter to watch him talk to people you didn't know exist. Oh, and Daredevil is quite the big deal around here (my head).
