3. Casablanca (1942)
dir. Michael Curtis The Reputation: The film at least one of your family cries over. Humphrey Bogart is a cynical bar owner in Nazi occupied Casablanca. His old flame, Ingrid Bergman, turns up with her resistance leader husband. Will Bogart get his old love back by selling her husband to the Nazis, or will he get them out of Casablanca and lose Ilsa all over again? Why It's More Fun Than It Sounds: There is absolutely nobody working in film today like Humphrey Bogart. The man was a one of kind, hes a type unlikely to ever be seen again. Take a look at his face. Would a hangdog guy like that ever get a leading role in a Hollywood, romantic film today? He looks like Droopys grandfather! But his wry, cynical, intelligent delivery makes him a joy to watch. And his role as Rick Blaine is a perfect casting. Its not hard to emphasis with him. Hes the wounded romantic trying to do the right thing. If you know that feel, Casablanca is for you. The supporting players also help the film. Claude Rains is brilliant as the joyful corrupt Captain Renault leading to one of the films funniest scenes, as he has to close Ricks bar on Nazi orders: http://youtu.be/SjbPi00k_ME
