3. Laura Dern - I Am Sam

Laura Dern was recognized as the Best Supporting Actress this year for her role as Nora Fanshaw, the predatory divorce lawyer in Marriage Story. She's been picking up prizes and awards all season long for this role, so this came as no surprise. Dern is probably best known to most viewers for her recent roles in Big Little Lies and her recurring role in the Jurassic Park and World series of films

The actress found herself on the other side of the courtroom in 2001's I Am Sam, the tale of an intellectually disabled man who is fighting to keep custody of his daughter. When the court rules against him, his daughter is taken away and placed with Laura Dern's foster mother, the incredibly-named Randy Carpenter. Overly saccharine and simplistic in its storytelling, the film is laughable and predictable, saved only by Sean Penn's standout performance as the titular Sam. Definitely not one of those that this year's Best Supporting Actress will be mentioning at dinner parties.

Likewise, it's unlikely that she'll be bringing up her role of Prudence in Little Fockers which is the nine thousandth sequel to Meet The Parents. Little Fockers finds another flimsy reason to get Robert De Niro suspicious of his son-in-law, played by Ben Stiller, and set them at odds. Apparently hilarity ensues in a film that has the keywords "projectile vomiting" and "reference to pubic hair" on IMDb.

On the other hand, she can comfort herself with the thought that she did have a role in fellow Oscar-winning film, Little Women.
