47. Sin City (2005) - Robert Rodriguez

Sin City (2005) - Robert RodriguezThree hardboiled tales from Basin City, an American film noir community. Ex-con Marv avenges a murdered hooker, private eye Dwight helps a red light district stay independent from the Mob and disgraced cop Hartigan shields a dancer from a psychotic sadist. I was worried when I first heard they were making a Sin City movie. Not least when I heard that Robet Rodriguez was on board to direct. The guy had never done anything that had really impressed me and I can't tell you how excited I was to see a "Sergio Leone" tribute with Once Upon a Time in Mexico back in 2003. Although I do kinda like the film, I was expecting so much more from that. Jesus Christ was I wrong. Sin City is amazing. As soon as Josh Hartnett finishes off Marley Shelton in the opening mintues and the music score kicks in and we see the awesome cast credits fly by across the screen...I knew I was just going to love this film. Sin City is probably the closest adaptation of a graphic novel we will ever see translated on screen. With the comic series creator Frank Miller on board, Rodriguez meticolously shot three stories from the books almost frame by frame of what's illustrated in the source material. The striking use of a digitally projected black and white world along with the awesome character narration, Rodriguez truly suceeded in giving you a real feel of Miller's world. Mickey Rourke was born to play Marv, I swear to God I was watching the character of the novel on screen and not an actor playing the character. Bruce Willis has a filmography of a movie geek's dream, he never looks out of place in any film or any genre. Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Brittany Murphy and the rest of the hotties in the film take the meaning of "femme fatale" to a whole new level. Sin City is as stylish as any Brian De Palma movie, as fun as a Tarantino experience and as respectful to both the film noir and comic book genre that were it's origins. Only problem with the film.... Clive Owen.
