5 Awesome Emerging Cinema Trends and 5 That Suck
4. Awesome - 3D
I've probably just lost a bunch of readers, but I knew that putting this on the Awesome side of things would be divisive, when I started putting this list together. For those of you still reading, let me tell you why I think the current 3D trend is awesome, and before I go any further let me qualify that post-converted 3D movies like Clash of the Titans and Alice In Wonderland are terrible and should never be done and that this is only an endorsement of natively shot 3D. Avatar. Prometheus. Hugo. A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (yep). Transformers: Dark of the Moon (yep again). Every Pixar movie released in 3D. The Adventures of Tintin. These films all showed that in the right hands (similar to the previous entry) 3D can be an immersive experience, which brings you further into the world of the film. It's become apparent to me that the genres best suited to 3D are animation and sci-fi/action, or in the case of Harold & Kumar, comedy - but that only works when actually making fun of the technology, and having fun with it. Overall, the best use of this technology adds depth to the image, stretching it AWAY from the viewer, as opposed to things leaping out of the screen TOWARD you. I personally can't wait to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 3D, in High Frame Rate if I can find somewhere close enough to me screening it that way. Trust me folks, 3D is here to stay: Avatar 2 & 3 of will course be in 3D, as will the next Tintin movie, should they get it together. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that Star Wars Episode VII will be in 3D - which would be awesome, as long as they do it natively, which again, is the only type of 3-D we should be supporting. Any movie that wasn't filmed in native 3-D, and was just post-converted for the extra cash, should be avoided and boycotted. See it in 2D if you really want to see it, but by voting with our wallets, we can hopefully send a message to the studios.
