1. Anything Else (2003)
Few Woody Allen films would be described as "boring", but his
Anything Else is just that, despite being cited as, curiously enough, one of Quentin Tarantino's favourite films of the last 20 years. The film revolves around Jerry Falk (Jason Biggs), a writer living in New York who embarks on a steamy affair with Amanda (Christina Ricci), while trying to get his current girlfriend to dump him so that he can carry on with Amanda guilt-free. The film simply oozes desperation, as Allen tries to refresh his shtick by casting a marketable, young, Jewish-looking actor in the role that he might have played once upon a time. While there is a nice subplot where Jerry consults Allen's character for advice - in what feels like a passing of the torch-type moment - overall it's just completely forgettable, even if Christina Ricca is her usual lovely self. Biggs doesn't quite have the gravitas to pull the neurotic central role off - which sounds similar to Jim from
American Pie, but is far from it - and frankly, why would you bother watching it when you could have, well, anything else (slow clap). Which Allen films are your favourite and least favourite? Will Allen's latest film,
To Rome with Love, shake up the list at all?
To Rome with Love, is in cinemas this Friday.
