5 Awful Films That Are Actually Really Good

3. Alien 3

And we're back to the Alien universe once again and for the last time (I could never argue that Resurrection wasn't terrible and the Alien vs. Predator movies don't exist in my mind). Alien is one of the best trilogies of all time. Each one has its own style and feeling and, of course, the first two are masterpieces in their respective genres. Alien 3 may not have hit the heights that its predecessors did but that doesn't stop it from being a tense and gripping thriller from beginning to end. The Assembly Cut put together for the dvd is an impeccably shot, dark, nihilistic, art house movie with a complex and challenging lead. Basically it's business as usual for David Fincher who had an extremely difficult time with his this, his debut feature, and has since disowned the film. No matter how much Fincher hates the film it's his involvement that makes it such a great movie. While his style isn't as pronounced as it would come to be in Seven or Fight Club the film still has all of the qualities that make him such an amazing director. Fincher's film succeeds because he took the franchise back to Ridley Scott territory by making a scary Alien movie again and also by disregarding any notion that the Alien universe is anything but a living nightmare.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
