5 Best (& 5 Worst) Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition Scenes
1. BEST: Boromir Flashback
Considering he is one of the most beloved characters, has a great story arc and is the only member of the Fellowship to actually die heroically sacrificing himself we know surprisingly little about Boromir's backstory.
With this in mind it makes complete sense for the inclusion of a flashback set after Boromir's victory in Osgiliath and just before he heads to Rivendell to join the Fellowship which sheds some light on the man and his family. As we meet Faramir, Boromir's younger brother who is always in his shadow, we get a glimpse at the camaraderie between the two of them which is never seen in the theatrical edition. As well as seeing the two brothers bonding we also see their father, Denethor II, and the fondness he has for the triumphant Boromir and the disappointment he has for Faramir which is both heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure.
This short five minute scene struggled to find a place in the trilogy, however, and even placed near the beginning of the extended edition of The Two Towers feels a tad forced. If only Jackson could have found a suitable place for this scene which gives us a sense of the relationship between these brothers and their father it would have added more weight to the death of Boromir and the struggle of Faramir.
