5 Best (& 5 Worst) Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition Scenes

7. BEST: The Midgewater Marshes

The extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring is only 30 minutes longer, most of the extra material being lengthier pre-existing scenes with only a few original scenes. So of the few original scenes cut, it is a shame that the Midgewater Marshes failed to make the theatrical release.

It is easy to see why this short sequence was cut as it is not essential to the overall narrative but it contains some great scenes. As Aragorn leads the Hobbits to Rivendell we are able to see their wariness towards this stranger wane as he successfully leads them through the treacherously boggy Midgewater Marshes.

However, the most striking scene sees Aragon accidentally wake up Frodo as he sings Lay of Leithian, a song which tells the tale of an elf maiden who gave her love to a man before her death. The parallels to Aragorn's love for Arwen and his fear of her death are apparent without any explicit dialogue and provides a moment of calm amidst the perilous journey.
