5 Best (& 5 Worst) Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition Scenes

3. BEST: Giving Of The Gifts

Of all the scenes that failed to make the theatrical cut Galadriel's giving of the gifts not making it in hit hardest with book readers. That such a beautiful moment got cut in the first place is a shame as it now only exists in the extended edition.

The sequence provides the Fellowship with a new lease of life after Gandalf's apparent demise as Galadriel leaves them all with gifts befitting to their personality. Frodo is given the Light of Eärendil, to guide him through the dark times, and Legolas is given the Bow of the Galadhrim, an elegant yet lethal weapon like the elf himself.

Merry and Pippin's gifts of the Daggers of the Noldorin are excellent metaphors for their short and spiky personality. Sam's remark is perfect as he asks Galadriel, bemused by his gift of the Elven rope, "have you run out of those nice, shiny daggers?" Of course, not to be outdone in the comedic stakes, Gimili asks if he can have one hair from her golden head to which she obligingly gives him three instead.

She also perceptively notes that she cannot give Aragorn any gift greater than the love he bears for Arwen, a tender moment amongst the comedy in a sequence sadly most will not have seen.
