5 Best New Films Shown At Celluloid Screams 2013

1. Big Bad Wolves

Big Bad Wolves Somehow Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado manage to make a serious revenge film about a pedophile killer both funny and moving in what is likely to be the best non mainstream movie this year. Following the abduction, rape, torture and decapitation of several young girls the suspect - a religious studies teacher - finds himself held captive in the basement of the latest victims father. Tied to a chair the teacher is asked again and again where he has hidden the dead girls heads but no matter what torture is carried out he continues to proclaim his innocence. What could easily have been a dark and harrowing 100 plus minutes instead becomes a slightly ridiculous farce in which you really begin to believe that the wrong man has been captured. As the film draws to its bloody climax however it becomes apparent that there is still one more victim out there waiting to be found but have the captors taken things too far in their bid for personal justice or will the man who may or may not be a sadistic child molester be able to provide them all with the answers they've been searching for before it's too late? Don't let the tough subject matter fool you. This is actually a really enjoyable movie and an interesting subject for Israel's film industry to tackle. Big Bad Wolves is as good a thriller as Hollywood can churn out on a good day and in most cases it is better. If there's one subtitled film you see in 2013 then make Big Bad Wolves that film. It is too important a movie to simply ignore.
