5 Changes That Would Have Improved Pulp Fiction

2. Give Fabienne Something To Do

pulpfiction-fabienne That isn't to say that Fabienne isn't likeable - from her introduction, the French girlfriend to Bruce Willis' Butch is at times sweet and funny and even sexy. The real problem comes through the fact that while most of the other women in the film are developed and have some dimensions to them, Fabienne comes across as a rather weak and watery character in comparison. For example, when Bruce Willis returns from his adventures retrieving his watch, Fabienne becomes emotional and bursts into tears when he scolds her - and while there's some hinting in the film that she is actually pregnant with Butch's child, it seems a shame that Fabienne could not have had some element of strength inside her or some further development - she does play an important and central role in Butch's story and it's a shame that there's not really anything for her to do, no side-story or mini-arc she could go through alone. She comes across as kind of childlike in her on-screen appearances and rather bland to be honest - not a critique on actress Maria de Medeiros' skills but rather on a character designed to be solely a love interest (however half-heartedly) and nothing much else, sadly.
