5 Changes That Would Have Improved The Dark Knight Rises

4. Identity Theft

Batman gave away his identity more times than Starbucks gives away free coffee during their happy hour. I'm not sure why the Nolan brothers felt compelled to reveal Batman's identity like it meant nothing anymore. Maybe it was to raise the stakes or up the ante, or maybe they didn't really care anymore because it was the last in the series, so they might as well have thrown the secret identity card out the window. To be honest, it would've been fine if Bane revealed Batman's identity to everyone and by everyone, I mean literally, everyone in Gotham. It would've caused an uproar and endangered Bruce's life even more; there would've been outrage and conflict amongst the people of Gotham, which would've raised the stakes even higher. Would Gotham trust their Dark Knight when they realized he was a billionaire playboy playing a vigilante? Would people still stand beside him? Would the people of Gotham rise up with him to support his cause and fight against Bane and his army? We'll never know because apparently the only people intelligent enough to figure out Batman was Bruce Wayne were the bad guys. Bane knew right off the bat somehow because the League of Shadows also teaches critical thinking and analysis along with bodybuilding and hand-to-hand combat, and Selina Kyle just happened to be there when Bane blurted out Batman's secret identity. The only other smart cookie was John Blake, a cop aka detective, who somehow intuited that Bruce was Batman because apparently all orphans think the same way. When stuff gets tough and you have no parents to tone down your angst, you immediately have thoughts of becoming a law breaking vigilante to clean up the city that made you an orphan. Regardless, if the Nolan brothers were going to play with Batman's identity, then they should've put it all out there without shame, or save the big reveal for later, so his "death" would've had more of an impact on Gotham. I would much rather have had Bruce Wayne reveal his identity by choice ala Iron Man (humbly, of course) to the public in a heart rendering, epic last stand speech to Gotham because in the end, he was a symbol for them and that could never be corrupted. Plus, Commissioner Gordon wouldn't have looked so dumb in the end when Batman had to spell out that he was Bruce Wayne.

I'm a thinker/fantasizer who writes down his thoughts and fantasies hoping it makes sense to everyone else. Also I'm an aspiring screenwriter, but if I can work in film at all, I'd be happy. One day you may hear the name Ryan Kim and associate it with "Academy Award winning writer" or with "where's that guy with my coffee." If the latter comes true, please let it be Paul Thomas Anderson's coffee I'm getting.
