5 Crazy Ways Tom Hardy Got Into Character For Famous Roles
2. He Isolated Himself & Refused To Make Friends With The Other Actors - Mad Max: Fury Road
Mad Max: Fury Road emerged as arguably the most unexpectedly brilliant movie of the year. Whilst most people probably doubted the film itself, though, there was never any doubt that Hardy would pull off the role of Mad Max himself. Predictably, Hardy nailed the role once made famous by Mel Gibson, pulling in a strange, scatty and - let's face it - "not quite right in the head" incarnation of the character; very Hardy in execution, you'll agree. Whilst nobody is ever going to know exactly what happened out in the deserts of Namibia (where Fury Road was shot), what we do know is that Hardy went a little overboard in the whole "getting into character" department. In short, he isolated himself, disconnected from the other actors, and consciously refused to bond with them. In retrospect, this really injects his Max with a disturbed persona that plays wonderfully on-camera, but at the time it only served to alienate the other actors - especially Charlize Theron, who found Hardy's approach maddening. She claimed that working with Hardy was an "awkward" experience because of the way he chose to behave on the set of the film, unable to converse with the actor because he was always off muttering to himself. Weird, that's for sure - but the results speak for themselves.
