1. Brad Bird
Brad Bird is another up-and-coming director with a ton of clout and an astounding resume. He got his start in animation, with such beloved films as The Iron Giant, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles, before showing that he could easily transition to live-action as well with 2012's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Bird is another director who puts visual spectacle second behind character-driven storylines that not only tug at the heartstrings, but play around with a full spectrum of emotions. The Iron Giant is arguably one of the best Superman films ever made, while The Incredibles is often regarded as one of the best superhero films of all time. Part of what made The Incredibles so special was its focus on the younger "supers" of the family, Dash and Violet. Dash may not be an orphan living on the streets, but he's a kid struggling with identity issues and finding his true calling. Once he finds that he's capable of suiting up and saving the world, he does so with a huge grin on his face. The Incredibles also employed stunning visuals and the same "old fashioned," "golden age" style that put Bryan Singer's Superman Returns on this list earlier. Needless to say, Bird has the credentials and the sensibilities to do a character like Shazam justice, while aptly adapting the Billy Batson side of the story and appealing to both young and adult audiences. So, what did you think of our picks? Would you like to see any of these directors tackle a hero like Shazam? Or did you have someone else in mind? Sound off in the comments.
