5 Disturbingly Common Historical Inaccuracies In Movies About The Ancient World

2. Big Details Are Left Out

In 300, the Spartans are a brave band of 300 men that single-handedly fight off the vast army of Persians, which they do while basically naked and using single combat. In reality, the Spartans were joined by a large force of Greeks from all states at the battle of the Hot Gates. Additionally, in warfare the Spartans never broke rank, and instead always fought in a Phalanx formation, and they also wore a suit of full body armour called Hoplite armour. Sorry ladies. Do you want to know why the film Troy was so bad? Well, one of the many reasons? A major plot device was removed: the Gods! If you take these take out, the plot makes no sense. In the Iliad, the Gods manipulate the heroes on both sides in order to achieve their own agenda; the whole reason for the war in the first place was a result of a divine beauty contest. How do you think Paris of Troy ended up with Helen of Sparta? If you remove the Gods from this story and the film will fall apart, which it did. Speaking of the immortal Gods it came as something of a surprise that they can die? But the facts are there in The Immortals for all to see. Good job Mr Singh.
