You know what, this'll probably be fine within the context of the finished film, but in the trailer it's simultaneously a silly image and a cynical bone for the fans to chew on. Director Josh Trank and writer Simon Kinberg have repeatedly stated they're not being confined by the comic books, meaning they're wanting the film to be viewed purely on its own merits. And thus it can be said without fear of treading on graphic novel toes, that this shot, of The Thing emerging from a rock chrysalis, looks ridiculous. It's like John Connor shaking hands with his naked father in Terminator Genisys - it's something that no doubt happens, but hasn't been shown before for a reason. But the moment goes worse than just being a bit odd. Fantastic Four is a film that has kept all information close to its chest, revealing nothing until this tease. And in reference to The Thing, little was seen in the trailer either; the best look at Ben Grimm post-transformation is poorly lit and from behind. That's not really a bad thing in and of itself, but Fox haven't just put him to the side - they've used that fact as an extra marketing tool. The Thing is above and beyond the film's most important effect, but he isn't a Cloverfield, or even a Godzilla. Seeing the new design isn't a major driving force for fans, yet the trailer is trying to turn it into one. Now of course Fox don't want to ruin the reveal with some crummy, unfinished CGI, but including a moment that explicitly creates mystery around something totally unmysterious is blatantly geared to inciting as much press coverage as possible...
