5 Great Comedy Movie Sequels (And 5 That Were Disappointments)

2. Toy Story 2 (1999)

While Pixar has been pretty sequel-happy these past few years, we can't forget that they made two Toy Story films before Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, or The Incredibles. Thankfully, both Toy Story films are very fun to watch, and in many ways, it's an improvement over the first. This is why I had to include the film on the list even though it's an animated movie. First of all, there just aren't that many great comedy sequels to begin with, but most importantly, "Toy Story 2" is a damn good film. So good, they kind of repeated the formula for third one. What's great about the second one is that it really gets into the core of these toy characters, especially with Woody. Whereas Toy Story has that touching moment when Buzz Lightyear realizes he's just a toy, Toy Story 2 goes deeper into what being a toy is really about. Woody starts to realize that once Andy gets older, he'll have no use for him anymore. He has the chance to live on forever in Al's Toy Barn. Woody coming to terms with himself and what he means to Andy is what makes this so great, and dare I say it, superior to the original. Toy Story 2 would prove that Pixar would be an unstoppable force in the ensuing decade which is book-ended, oddly enough, with the very solid Toy Story 3. For eleven years, they were basically the only animated studio that mattered, though Dreamworks definitely made their own mark with the Shrek franchise. In between those Toy Story movies was a studio truly finding its voice and making consistently high quality work. They've been in a bit of a lull these past few years, but hopefully they'll continue to have more original and interesting ideas to explore in the future.
