1. Edward Scissorhands (1990)
How could it be anything else? As well as being Tim Burtons masterpiece, Scissorhands is also Danny Elfmans best film score. The minds of the two creatives are clearly at one here; while Burton constructs a beautiful blend of Gothicism and fairy tale on screen, Elfmans soundtrack is full of both creeping chords, childlike strokes and tear-teasing lingering tunes. Oh, and theres lots of oooohh-ing. If there is a fault with the soundtrack, its that it could be said to be too overtly emotional. However, the whole film is looking to give the heart a squeeze so its really no criticism but an example of how the direction and the score come together to tell the same story. If you listened to the soundtrack without the dialogue you would be perfectly able to follow the shifting tones of the story and the character the very epitome of what a great film score should do. And now, to send us off, the highlight of both the film and the soundtrack, yes, we all know it, the famous Ice Dance scene where Winona Ryders Kim d- well, you can see for yourself below.
