5 Horror Movie Characters Who Should Have Died (And 5 We Wish Hadn’t)

1. Should Have Died: Detective Mark Hoffman - Saw IV

Scream/ A Quiet Place
Lionsgate Films

One of the Jigsaw Killer's many accomplices, Detective Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), who is first introduced in Saw III, does eventually die in the seventh installment of this torture-porn series. However, it is surprising that this smug serial killer survives so long, somehow outliving many more likeable and interesting characters.

Throughout the sequels, Hoffman emerges as the series' secondary antagonist, and his grisly exploits often take center-stage. Once a hard-working police detective, this cop-gone-rogue became an accomplice to Jigsaw after surviving one of the killer's gruesome traps.

While Hoffman excels where other Jigsaw apprentices and accomplices fail (we're looking at you, Amanda Young) and commits some of the most heinous acts in the entire series, the detective arguably goes too far too many times.

In Saw V, Hoffman betrays Peter Strahm (Scott Patterson), the devoted detective desperately trying to solve the Jigsaw Killer case, and one of the smartest, most resilient characters in the series.

Most notably, in Saw 3-D, Hoffman brutally kills Jill Tuck (Betsy Russell), John Kramer's (Tobin Bell) ex-wife, utilising the infamous reverse-bear-trap which has claimed many victims within the series.

While his eventual death at the hands of Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) is certainly satisfying, we wish the deaths of Strahm and Tuck had been avenged (or even prevented) slightly earlier.
