5 Marvel Movies That Surpassed Expectations
4. Deadpool (2016) & Deadpool 2 (2018)
When Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool made his first appearance in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, most fans bemoaned that the character had been ruined, and the prospect of him getting the big-screen treatment seemed unlikely.
Therefore, when the project was green-lit in 2014, expectation were very low. However, by keeping the raunchy (and fourth-wall-breaking) humour true of the source material, the film ended being a treat for both fans and critics. It soon became the must-see movie event of 2016, and demonstrated that R-rated movies can indeed be a box office draw.
The first film felt so original and different, that everyone assumed they couldn’t do it again. But, all of a sudden, they made a sequel equally as entertaining as the first. Sure, Deadpool 2 may have lacked the scrappy, low-budget charm of the original (everything was a lot bigger and more explosive), but it still manages to be just as witty, raunchy, funny and filled with heart.
Although the franchise is up in the air at the moment (with the X-Men series being transferred to the MCU), a third film would definitely be welcome.
