5 Movie Box Office Bombs That Were Actually Really Good
4. Waterworld
Yet another post-apocalyptic Kevin Costner film makes this list, but given the circumstances surrounding the production of this film, it's no surprise it lost money. Waterworld follows the story of the Mariner (Kevin Costner), in a world left flooded by the melting of the ice caps. On his lone ranger style adventures across the seas, he encounters Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and Enola (Tina Majorino) as they escape from the vicious clan known as the Smokers in their search for land.
Kevin Costner poured most of his own money into the production of Waterworld as at the time, he was going through divorce negotiations with ex-wife, Cindy Costner. Waterworld cost $175 million to make but only recouped $88 million at the domestic box office. Internationally, the film took in an extra $176 million which saved the movie from bombing completely.
The added bonus for Costner was that the money he spent on making the film helped him to avoid a huge divorce payout to Cindy Costner and despite initially mixed feedback, it now sits amongst Costner's most popular and well known films.
