1. Eddie Morra - Limitless (2011)
I hate it when movies lose their moral bearings. What are we supposed to take away from Limitless? Eddie Morra started taking a drug, a brain steroid, and ultimately it worked out for him. Because of the drug he became rich, famous, powerful, and got his girl back. Oh, and he became really smart. And while there were some potential side effects, he apparently was able to avoid those by
continuing to take the drug. Huh?! In fact, by the end he may have even improved the drug. Well, good for him, but bad for the audience. I know Im flirting with controversy here because Limitless was a strongly reviewed and highly popular film. But for me it absolutely didnt work. Were in this film, following this character, and I suppose we want him to emerge victorious more than the stereotypical bad guy antagonists, but where are Eddies redeeming qualities? What good is he doing in this world besides being a drug addict and saving his own skin. In a way I felt like The Bourne Legacy suffered from a similar plot in that Aaron Cross spent much of that film trying to acquire the blue pill that would allow him to retain his superhuman abilities. But I am much more forgiving of Bourne because it has many qualities (including more positive traits for the characters) that are absent in Limitless. This film earned the number one spot because I believe it was not the filmmakers intentions to have the protagonist be unlikable. Because of this, I feel strongly that the result is simply a bad movie. Yeah, we can all dream about stumbling on some pill that will make us more intelligent, but the hope would be that if we did we would use that newly discovered ability for more than simply always getting what we want.
I have a feeling Ive only scratched the surface of disagreeable main characters. Please let me know which films you would put on this list in the comments section below.
