5 Movies That Prove Stanley Kubrick Is The Greatest Director Ever

4. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7fO3bzPeBQ Easily the most controversial film of Kubrick's career but also one of his greatest achievements in character development. Kubrick has never been perceived as an actor's director in the way that people like Scorsese and Hitchcock are but A Clockwork Orange is the perfect example to debunk that claim. Malcolm McDowell's performance as Alex DeLarge is one for the ages. Alex is the most detestable character in all of film. He is a violence obsessed rapist with no redeeming qualities yet Kubrick is able to successfully portray him as a likeable and relateable person in a way that no other director in history has accomplished to such a degree. The greatest thing about A Clockwork Orange is how fully realized the world that the characters inhabit is. Everything is depicted in such a way that the film has a perverted sense of familiarity about it. It is foreign to the viewer yet also recognizable which keeps it constantly enthralling and disturbing in equal measure.
