5 New Movie Marketing Tools We're Already Tired Of

3. 3-D

3-D is nothing new, but has grown exponentially in popularity over the last few years... mostly because of the extra cash it can make a studio. Yes, some films utilize the format to its full potential (Gravity, I'm looking at you), but for the most part films simply get post-converted to 3-D in an effort to give it a slight chance of boosting profits at the box office. This goes for re-releases as well. Films like Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menance, Top Gun and Jurassic Park are converted to 3-D and shown "like you've never seen them before!" This helps to increase a film's overall box office numbers (which worked for Jurassic Park, giving it a place in the billion dollar club), while sometimes helping to market upcoming sequels or reboots of the originals.
