5 Questions That Must Be Answered By Warner Bros. On DC Film Announcement

1. Who's In Charge?

There are many reasons why DC on film has failed to get off the ground (no pun intended, Superman), but one of the biggest has to be the lack of a central, unified vision. That vision comes from having a strong leader with enough authority to make the big, risky decisions needed to move forward on projects that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make and market. Marvel Studios has that in its chief executive offer, Kevin Feige, who's now delegated some of his creative power to a proven talent in Joss Whedon. There's no such thing as DC Studios. There is DC Entertainment, headed by president Diane Nelson and chief creative officer Geoff Johns. Neither of these individuals can green light a motion picture. They seem to be much more involved in decisions regarding animation, video games, and merchandising than anything else. Since its reorganization in 2010, there is little evidence to suggest the company is anything more than a glorified suggestion box in the context of making live-action features. It is doubtful Warner Bros. Pictures Group is going to delegate any real authority to DCE, so the next best thing would be assigning someone the role of creative consultant. This person would be charged with overseeing the development of and continuity between DC movies. Fortunately, Warner Bros. already has a great working relationship with an ideal candidate. David S. Goyer is an accomplished screenwriter with as much significant experience developing films within the genre as any other candidate imaginable. He has an extensive knowledge of the source material for DC's lineup. More importantly, he already wrote the script for Man of Steel and is responsible for the original pitch for the film. Goyer has laid the foundation for the DC cinematic universe and should be given the opportunity to see its construction all the way through. Agree? Disagree?
