5 Reasons Why Marvel Will Lose Big On Captain America: Civil War

2. The Timing

The very fact that this is an MCU film automatically gives Civil War box office clout. As of late, there hasn't been much that can stand toe to toe with a big superhero film's opening weekend. While Marvel has certainly been the big kid on the playground, it can't be ignored that this particular opening will be coming fresh off the heels of the release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. DoJ is obviously DCs stepping stone to their own version of the Avengers, and is likely to draw huge interest as well as cast a large shadow. On the other side, Civil War will be released a mere week before X-Men: Apocalypse. Product saturation cannot be ignored here. Civil War is a big deal, no doubt, but being the meat in a Justice League and X-Men sandwich can't taste that great. While it may not be a huge factor in the history of Cap films, Winter Soldier also hit theatres during spring break. Civil War won't benefit from that natural spike in ticket sales. After looking at the figures, the trends, and the other tangibles, there is another elephant in the room that needs to be acknowledged. Nobody wants it, or wants to believe it, but at some point the superhero movie bubble is going to pop. That's where the title of this article really rings true. Now that DC is truly in the game, the already soaked market is about to be flooded. Fox's Fantastic Four certainly didn't do the genre any favors. While real fans know the difference between a Marvel film and a Marvel licensed film, many film goers just know that a big Marvel property just bombed at the box office. This could make folks a bit apprehensive about unproven superheroes in the movie theatre. In a world where Doctor Strange and Aqua Man are about to have their own movies, how long can this wave be ridden?
