His take on the character may have lacked depth and warmth, but that was more a product of the script than anything. The character of Superman is a difficult one for an actor. Trying to deliver a performance audiences can connect with when you're playing an almost-indestructible flying alien in a ridiculous costume is a challenge to say the least. Christopher Reeve, for most people the iconic screen Superman, had four movies to imprint his take on the character. Cavill had half a movie, as the first act of
Man of Steel follows Clark Kent's journey to becoming Superman. After little over an hour of screentime in the iconic red and blue suit, Cavill has to share the screen with an all-new Batman
in his own franchise. It seems a bit hasty to add Batman in the first sequel; Snyder's universe would have greatly benefited from another standalone story that further develops Cavill's take on Superman. The Daily Planet, Clark Kent's relationship with Lois Lane and possibly even Lex Luthor provide more than enough material for a straightforward
Man of Steel 2 that would give Cavill a bit more breathing space in which to make the role his own. Instead the actor is in danger of being overshadowed by the Caped Crusader as cinematically at least, Batman has always been the more popular character of the two.
