3. Michael Gough
Sadly for the legacy of the late Michael Gough, this was to be his final appearance as Alfred Pennyworth, the loyal butler of Bruce Wayne. One of only two cast members to have lasted the entire Burton and Schumacher quadrilogy, it is hard to argue that the BAFTA award winning actor, with his impeccable diction, quiet dignity and a seemingly unshakable air of calm, was a perfect fit for the role in the near decade he played him. While the storyline surrounding his character's rare illness and apparent impending death seemed convoluted, confusing and if were honest, slightly unnecessary; his performance of failing health and the impact this can have on even the greatest of heroes makes Pennyworth, ironically, the only character you dont want to die.
