5 Reasons Why Joss Whedon Shouldn't Direct Batgirl

3. He Needs To Take A Break From The Genre

Joss Whedon Justice League

Since his involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Whedon has spent most of his decade getting caught up in the whirlwind of success that is the comic book movie. Avengers Assemble was unmatched in its scale and box office receipts when it released in 2012, and its follow-up - Age of Ultron - managed similar feats in spite of its familiarity.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - now in its fifth season - was also a Whedon work, and while Justice League has marked his only return to the genre, it's important to remember that that last Avengers sequel is only two years old. The director has spent the entirety of the last seven years working with comic books, and while that's come mostly to the benefit of moviegoers everywhere, one would hope that he'd be seeking pastures new in the wake of that first Avengers sequel.

And yet, that shift has yet to come. The only transition we have seen has been a move from one superhero-themed cinematic universe for another, and while it's one DC fans should, in theory, be able to savour, the thing that was most appealing about that universe was that it strived to be something different than what Marvel were originally offering.

Now? Well, there's a danger that everything DC becomes Whedon-esque in tone. That's no vindication of the universe's detractors either (of which this author would count himself among). Instead, it places the DCEU in a precarious position, and Whedon in a genre that he seems unable to escape.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
