5 Reasons Why The Wolverine Suffers From Goldilocks Syndrome

3. Our Lead Is Interesting, But Not Independent

The Wolverine cropped Hello person from under a rock, let me just update you. Logan is part of a league of mutants called The X-Men. He was by far the most popular character in the film franchise, and as such, got his own spin-off. There is another X-Men film fast approaching, and Wolverine is being brought back on-board to complete that brood once again. It is quite clear that because of this; €˜The Wolverine€™ is as much about setting up that new film as it is about telling Wolverine€™s story. It is annoyingly clear even until the post credit sting, that €˜The Wolverine€™ began life as a stand alone project, but soon spiralled into a set-up for €˜X-Men: Days Of Future Past.€™ The baddies Logan encounters are two-dimensional and feeble, they have little menace to them and feel awkwardly shoe horned in. This could easily have been the last big threat to a massively entertaining character. But instead feels like a doggie paddle in slightly open waters. Acid spitting snake lady anyone? No, me either. Rule 3; Don€™t make one character more enjoyable than their piers. Otherwise you might overshadow bigger projects. Remember, make them €œjust right.€

Part critic-part film maker, I have been living and breathing film ever since seeing 'Superman' at the tender age of five. Never one to mince my words, I believe in the honest and emotional reaction to film, rather than being arty or self important just for cred.
