5 Reviews Roger Ebert Got Horribly Wrong

3. Brazil (2 Stars)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Wh2b1eZFUM Majority Verdict: 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and holding a reputation as one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. Ebert's Review: Though much of Ebert's written review is spent describing the plot, he refers to Brazil as a "throwback to the psychedelic 1960s, to an anarchic vision in which the best way to improve things is to blow them up." He notes that the spectacular special effects are "heedless of sense", and calls it "hard to follow", citing Terry Gilliam's direction as demonstrating "no sure hand at the controls." Perhaps this review is more frustrating because it doesn't seem as in-depth and detailed as that of Blue Velvet; he clearly seems to think the film is style over substance - an apt complaint for just about any other Gilliam film, for sure - while this is ironically probably the director's most thoughtful and accomplished work. I would have loved to have heard more about his thoughts on the film.
